About The Twilight Zone

When I started working evening shifts nearly four years ago, I thought that staying awake would be my main problem. I had no idea how it would affect so many other things, from my memory to my metabolism. I certainly had no idea how at odds I would feel with a society that revolves broadly around a ‘typical’ working day.

When you look around, people who work shifts are everywhere. From bakers, bankers and bouncers to airline pilots, surgeons and nuclear scientists, a working day of 9 to 5 (or 8 to 6) is no longer a given. Early morning starts, late night finishes or the dreaded all-nighters make regular appearances in many a working week.

How does shift work affect us? What are the best bits – and the worst? Is there such a thing as the perfect shift to work? And how can I stop my skin looking so grey after a row of shifts?

This blog is about anything and everything to do with a life spent working unconventional hours.
